Aluminum Pergola Installation in Highlands Ranch

Looking for aluminum pergola installation in Highlands Ranch or the south Denver metro? Elevate Landscape & Spas installs aluminum pergolas over patios, decks and pool areas, attached to the house or freestanding in the yard. Aluminum gives you shade that won’t rot, warp or need staining, and it stands up to Colorado sun, wind and snow when it’s set on the right footings.

This page explains the types we install, why aluminum works so well here, how we build a pergola that stays solid through the winter, and what to know about HOA approval and permits before you start.

Freestanding pergolas over a patio, fire pit, outdoor kitchen or hot tub, anywhere in the yard.

Already bought a pergola kit? We install those too

Plenty of homeowners order a kitted aluminum pergola online and then need someone to handle the aluminum pergola installation properly. That’s a big part of our pergola work. We’ve installed kits on new caisson footings, attached three-post louvered systems to the house with motorized shades, and swapped out failing cedar pergolas for aluminum ones on existing decks.

If you haven’t ordered yet, call us first. We’ll measure, check the snow rating against your site, and make sure the post layout works with your patio, deck or retaining wall before you spend the money.

Why aluminum is the right pergola for Colorado

Wood pergolas look great on day one, but our dry air, big temperature swings and strong sun at altitude are hard on them. Cedar checks and splits, stain fades within a couple of seasons, and posts start to rot where they meet the ground. We get called to take down a lot of tired wood pergolas.

No rot, no warping aluminum won’t split, twist or soften where it sits in snowmelt.
Finish that lasts powder coating holds its color in high-altitude sun without yearly staining.
Lighter, stronger frames longer spans with slimmer posts, so the space feels open.
Low upkeep rinse it off, clear heavy snow, and check the moving parts once a season.

Our aluminum pergola installation process

With aluminum pergola installation, the pergola is only as good as what holds it up. The kit is the easy part. Footings, the house connection and getting everything square and level are what keep it solid for years.

How we install an attached aluminum pergola (illustration, not to scale). Footing size and fastening follow the pergola maker and your permit.
1
Louvered roof
Blades open for sun and air and close for shade. Pick a snow rating that suits our winters.
2
Ledger on the house
Fastened into solid framing with structural anchors, then flashed and sealed so water stays out of the wall.
3
Aluminum beam
Powder-coated aluminum that won’t rot, warp or split the way old cedar does.
4
Aluminum post
Set plumb and square so the roof sits level and the louvers close cleanly.
5
Bolted post base
Anchored into the footing with the bolts the pergola maker specifies.
6
Concrete caisson with rebar
Poured below the 36 inch frost line so freeze and thaw can’t lift the post.

The install, step by step

1
Visit, measure and plan
We look at the space, the house wall, the ground and where the sun hits, then plan post positions around your patio, deck and drainage.
2
Approval and permit
We tell you what the HOA and county need for your design, so approval is in hand before we dig.
3
Locate the utilities
Every install starts with a Colorado 811 locate, so we know what runs underground before any footing goes in.
4
Pour the footings
Concrete caissons with rebar go below the 36 inch frost line. On a deck we open the boards and set footings underneath.
5
Fasten the ledger
For attached pergolas we find solid framing, fasten the ledger with structural anchors, then flash and seal it against the wall.
6
Set posts and frame
Posts go on bolted bases, and the frame is squared and leveled so the roof sits true and the louvers close tight.
7
Roof, shades and extras
We fit the louvers or slats, then any motorized shades, privacy screens or heater that come with your system, and set the shade limits.
8
Test, clean up and walk through
We run every moving part with you, show you how to use it in snow and wind, and leave the site clean.

Built for Colorado snow and wind

Not every aluminum pergola is built for our winters. Douglas County designs roof structures for at least 30 pounds per square foot of snow, more at higher elevations, with no reduction allowed, and its design wind speeds start around 105 to 115 mph. Some entry-level pergola kits are rated below that. For example, one popular brand rates its standard model at 25 psf and its heavy-duty model at 62 psf.

So before any aluminum pergola installation, we check the published snow and wind ratings against your site and the way the pergola will be used. Fabric shades and awnings usually aren’t rated for snow, so they need to be rolled up when a storm comes in, and we’ll show you how to set the louvers the way the maker recommends.

HOA approval and permits in Highlands Ranch

In Highlands Ranch, the Highlands Ranch Community Association reviews pergolas and shade structures for location, height and how well they fit the house. It has up to 30 days to decide, so it pays to submit early. Other neighborhoods have their own HOA rules, so check your covenants.

On the county side, open pergolas that don’t carry a snow load are exempt from a building permit. A pergola with a roof that closes, which includes many louvered models, is treated more like a patio cover, and the permit needs a site plan, the footing size and spacing, and a ledger attachment detail. We’ll tell you which your design is, and give you the details your HOA form asks for.

Pergolas with decks, patios and pools

A pergola usually sits on something else we build. We can put one over a new paver patio, on a composite deck, beside a pool, or on a level area held up by a retaining wall. Because one team handles all of it, the footings, drainage and layout are planned together instead of patched in later.

What affects the cost of aluminum pergola installation

Every project is different. These are the things that make the biggest difference:

Size and number of bays a larger footprint means more posts, beams and footings.
Louvered or fixed roof operable louvers and motors cost more than fixed slats.
Attached or freestanding attaching to the house needs a ledger and flashing, freestanding needs more posts.
Your footings pouring through a deck, around a wall or in rocky ground takes more work.
Shades, screens and heat each add-on adds parts, power and install time.
Taking out the old one removing a failing wood pergola and hauling it away.
Power motorized parts need outdoor-rated outlets near the pergola.
HOA and permit a design that needs a permit adds drawings and inspection time.

Aluminum pergola FAQs

Do you install pergola kits I’ve already bought?

Yes. A lot of our pergola work is installing kits homeowners have already ordered, including louvered and motorized models. We handle the footings, the house attachment and the assembly, and we’ll tell you before you order if a kit won’t suit your space or our snow.

Is aluminum better than a wood pergola in Colorado?

For most yards, yes. Aluminum doesn’t rot, crack, warp or need restaining, and the powder-coat finish holds up to the strong sun at our altitude. Wood can look great, but it needs regular care, and we replace plenty of tired cedar pergolas.

Can an aluminum pergola handle Colorado snow?

A well-built one can, but ratings vary a lot between models. Douglas County designs roof structures for at least 30 pounds per square foot of snow, more at higher elevations, and some entry-level kits are rated for less. We check the rating against your site before anything is ordered, and we’ll tell you how to set the louvers and shades in a storm.

Do I need a permit for a pergola in Highlands Ranch?

It depends on the design. Douglas County exempts open pergolas that don’t carry a snow load, but a cover that acts like a roof, including many louvered pergolas, needs a building permit with footing and attachment details. We’ll tell you which your project is.

Do I need HRCA approval?

Usually, yes. The Highlands Ranch Community Association reviews pergolas and shade structures for location, height and how they fit the house, and it has up to 30 days to decide. Get approval before work starts. If you live in a different HOA, the same applies, so check your covenants.

Can you put a pergola on my deck?

Often, yes. The posts can’t just sit on deck boards, so we open the decking and set proper footings below, then close it back up. If you’re planning a new deck, it’s easiest to build both together.

Should I attach the pergola to the house or have it freestanding?

Attached pergolas make a great covered space right off the back door, but they need a solid connection into the house framing and careful flashing. Freestanding pergolas work anywhere in the yard, over a patio, fire pit or hot tub. We’ll look at your house and yard and recommend what will work best.

Can you add shades, privacy screens or a heater?

Yes. We install motorized shades, privacy slats and heaters that come with your pergola system. Motorized shades need an outdoor-rated power outlet nearby, so we’ll check that on the site visit.

How long does a pergola install take?

Most aluminum pergola installation jobs take a few days once materials are on site, with time for the footings to cure. Bigger systems with shades and screens take longer. We give you a schedule with your quote.

How much does an aluminum pergola cost?

It depends on size, louvered or fixed roof, attached or freestanding, the footings your site needs and any shades or screens. Every yard is different, so we give an exact quote after an on-site visit. Call (303) 718-4619 to set one up.
